'This dictionary formed the major Appendix to the Dissertation submitted to complete my Masters degree in Orkney and Shetland Studies, in July 2014. The Dissertation was based on two separate pieces of work. The first was this compilation, compendium if you will, of entries on the subject of the weather, the sea, the sky and the atmosphere, taken from all the major Orcadian and Shetlandic dialect dictionaries created over the past 150 years.
The aim of this dictionary is to place all words (referred to above and hereunder by the general term 'weather-words') into a single volume. This will enable anyone looking up an Orcadian or Shetlandic weather-word to view every entry made by every lexicographer, thus allowing the reader to compare the different nuances of definition of that word, and the contributions to its definition made by those individuals.'
