A thirdvolume of historical and archaeological papers relating to Orkney.
Published by Orkney Heritage Society with Orkney Archaeological Trust.
Paperback.
Availability date:
Volume 3, 2003.
This volume continues to broaden the scope of the previous Journals. Central to this volume is a paper by Colleen Batey on the Earl’s Bu in Orphir, though we found no shortage of good papers which make a scholarly contribution to the history and culture of the Orkney Islands.
The Journal includes papers by Colleen Batey, lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Glasgow; Paul Johnson with Northern Archaeological Associates, Barnard Castle; Evan MacGillivray (1908-1987), Orkney’s former County Librarian and who was principally responsible for the development of the Library and Museum services in Orkney; Brian Smith, Shetland Archivist; and Paul Newman, an architect with a particular interest in vernacular buildings, especially the design and construction of traditional farm buildings in Orkney.
Contents include;
- Holy Moses! Orkney Historians on Medieval Orkney.
- Before the Orkney Heritage Society.
- Excavations at the Earl's Bu, Orphir.
- Geophysical Survey at the Earl's Bu, Orphir, Orkney, 1989-91.
- Roofs of traditional Orcadian Farm Buildings.
- Recent Books and Papers.
