An oral history of the island of Sanday, Orkney, in sound and text featuring the Voices of Sanday.
The background of the Sanday Oral History Project goes back to 2003. The objective of the project was to record the lives and experiences of those currently living on Sanday and their memories of personal, local and world events.
The voices on this disc are both Sanday-born and Sanday-settled. They range from the veteran, called up as a young lad to be a Bevin Boy in the Second World War, to those who arrived on the island in adulthood. The stories that they tell record life before mains water and the changes that its arrival brought. Revolutions in agriculture and transport are spoken of, and of the ways in which those have changed the pace of life and way of island living. Other revolutions, quieter ones reveal themselves along the way - and there is much laughter in the telling.
