Bryce Wilson has pieced together the story of a hardy race of farmers, fishermen and seafarers who over time suffered famine and plague, war and impressment, and raised large families to seek their fortune across the globe.
These pages are enlivened by tales of laird and matriarch, whaler and gold-digger, ship-master and Arctic adventurer, bishop, missionary, witch, artist and music hall entertainer.
Bryce is a native of Stromness whose family roots are in the neighbouring island of Graemsay. He gave up teaching art to spend most of his working life as Museums Officer with Orkney Islands Council.
He has written many books including Sea Haven, Arthur Dearness & the Mermaid and Other Plays, Profit Not Loss and his most recent Stromness, a history.
