Substation site confirmed by SSE

The Orkney public have had the opportunity to learn where on the West Mainland a substation relating to the proposed new subsea cable between Caithness and Orkney will be built.

Events were held in the Harray Community Centre on Wednesday and in the Albert Hotel yesterday, Thursday, which revealed that the site planned for the substation is on land at Vestrafiold, west of Quoyloo, and around a mile north of the Bay of Skaill.

Speaking at the Kirkwall event, Lisa Marchi, community liaison manager with SSE, said they were delighted that there had been so much interest in the project, and reported a steady stream of visitors had come through the doors at both events.

She went on to say that although there were “one or two” people who voiced concerns, on the whole, feedback was “quite positive.”
