What does the future hold for the Pentland Firth?

A consultation has been launched looking at the future of the Pentland Firth and Orkney waters.

In 2010, Orkney Islands Council teamed up with Highland Council, Marine Scotland and Heriot Watt University to develop a pilot “Marine Spatial Plan” for the area. They are now seeking public views on the latest stage in this work.

Once agreed, the plan will be used to guide decisions made by public authorities on marine development and management in the Pentland Firth and Orkney waters. It aims, says the OIC, to balance the needs of all existing and future users of the area and protect the natural environment on which these users depend.

The consultation period runs until July 26, and the documents are available at www.scotland.gov.uk/Consultations/Current
