Advice for aurora watchers

Looking north-west from Springfield, Rousay, October 8, 2012, at
20h 24m UT 2012. A 10-second exposure Nikkor 24mm f/2.8. D100 SLR ISO 500. (John Vetterlein)

There was an extensive and intense auroral glow last night and into the early hours of this morning,  with some rapidly developing rays.

According to Rousay astronomer John Vetterlein: “We are frequently asked to give information on any auroral displays in progress. With the sun nearing maximum activity this winter, we would
strongly urge anyone interested in the ‘dancers’ to maintain constant vigilance and to be on the lookout through the dark hours.”
