Arrangements for Kirkwall bonfire and fireworks display

A scene from the 2011 bonfire and firework display.

The annual bonfire and fireworks display organised by the Rotary Club of Orkney for the Kirkwall and St Ola Community Council, takes place tonight, Saturday, at the Peedie Sea.

The Kirkwall City Pipe Band will play from 7pm, and the bonfire will be lit by Bryan Taylor, chairman of Kirkwall and St Ola Community Council, and Ronnie Johnson, president of the Rotary Club of Orkney, at 7.15pm.

The organisers are hoping for a large turnout of spectators and for good weather on the evening. Rotary Club members and helpers will be on duty and will also be selling the usual novelties, and donations will be gratefully received. Any profit from the event will be used in supporting local charities.

Parents are reminded that they are responsible for their children, and the organisers are asking that spectators do not use the middle path at the Peedie Sea but instead use the Pickaquoy Road, from either the Ayre Service Station end or from the supermarket end, or the path at the supermarket end.
