Event will look at aspects of Orkney dialect

An event to be held this weekend will look at the importance of the Orkney dialect and its role as part of the wider culture and heritage of the county.

‘Aspects of Orkney Dialect’ will cover the background and origins of the dialect and look at attitudes towards its use in the modern world. Recent research on the dialect will be featured along with poems and songs written in the vernacular.

Tom Rendall – one of the facilitators of the event commented: “This event should be of interest to local people and visitors. We welcome people of all ages and hope to encourage young people to think about using dialect. Workshops will be held in the afternoon where participants will be able to engage with the dialect. This should be an entertaining and educational day and the aim is to promote the dialect in Orkney through a range of different activities”

The event is being hosted by the Orkney Heritage Society and will run in the St Magnus Centre, on Saturday 24 between 10am and 3.30pm.
