Funding boost for Kirkwall placemaking project

A project aimed at improving Kirkwall as a place to live and visit has been awarded £685,000 to help encourage more walking and cycling in the town.

The funding from the charity Sustrans will support measures to make it more enjoyable and convenient for people to get about on foot or by bike.

These will form part of Orkney Islands Council’s placemaking project, which is currently under development and has an overall aim of improving the ambience of the town for local people and for visitors.

Areas under consideration for the project are sections of Kirkwall’s designated conservation area on Broad Street and the harbour front, as well as the area between Junction Road, Great Western Road and the Peedie Sea, known as Kirkwall Central West.
