Hatston Pier restrictions

New safety and security measures are now in place following the opening of the extension to Hatston Pier.

The pier – now almost a quarter of a mile in length – will play host in the weeks and months ahead to some of the largest cruise liners, offshore supply vessels and cargo ships to visit Orkney waters.

OIC Marine Services say that to ensure safety, general public access to the pier will be restricted at times when vessels are berthed alongside – except when passengers are boarding Serco NorthLink ferries on the Kirkwall-Aberdeen-Lerwick route.

David Sawkins, the council’s Harbour Master, said: “To ensure safety, public access to Hatston Pier will be restricted during visits by all vessels except Serco NorthLink’s roll-on roll-off passenger ferries. We feel this is the right move to make to make sure everyone is safe – passengers and crew, support services and the public at large.”
