The head of Police Scotland, Chief Constable Stephen House, is in the county today, Thursday, meeting with local police officers and councillors and embarking on a walkabout of Kirkwall town centre.

Chief Constable House became head of police Scotland, the new national police force, when it came into force on April 1.

Speaking earlier in the day, he was keen to assuage any concerns regarding the removal of any police resources from smaller areas under the national police force.

He said: “Moving to a single national police service does not threaten policing in Orkney as the public know it. People might be worried that there may be loss of resources, but policing is a service that is delivered locally and Police Scotland is all about local policing, as far as I’m concerned.”
