High winds are forecast

The Met office has issued a severe weather warning for Orkney and Shetland, with high winds forecast over the days ahead.

Gale force south-westerly winds are forecast to reach severe gale or even storm force during Thursday night and on Friday morning.

Winds will then very slowly decrease during Friday, but the Met Office warned that people should be aware that the strong winds may cause travel disruption.

A statement went on to say: “There is a risk of severe gales or storm force winds over north-west and far northern Scotland during Saturday and Sunday. Combined with high tides, there is the risk of large breakers over topping sea fronts and causeways, and of coastal flooding in low lying areas.”
