Stromness property damaged by fire

A two-storey house in Alfred Terrace, Stromness, was badly damaged by fire last night.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze was reported at 12.25am and four appliances attended the scene. Firefighters in breathing apparatus brought the fire under control using two main jets and one hose reel.

The spokesman said the first floor of the house was destroyed and there was severe smoke damage on the ground floor. No injuries have been reported.

A fire investigation is due to take place later today.

The property, which is let out as flats, is owned by Orkney Islands Council, which is working with the tenants affected to get them re-housed.
