Lessons begin at the new Kirkwall Grammar School today, Thursday, for the first time.

S4-S6 pupils are due to start the new term today, with the remainder of pupils starting tomorrow, Friday.

The school closed to all 770 pupils on December 18 to allow staff to begin the mammoth task of transferring equipment.

While other schools in the county resumed on Tuesday, the new term at KGS was pushed back two days to finalise arrangements before the arrival of the pupils.

The new KGS building was the final project included in the OIC’s £57 million Schools Investment Programme, which also saw the construction of the new Stromness Primary School, Papdale Halls of Residence and Pickaquoy swimming pool and fitness facilities.

With the new building officially now in use, the new KGS sports centre will open for business on Monday, January 13.
