Preparations are underway for the Deerness Small Boat Owners Association boat show, which is set to take place this Sunday.

Billy Bruce, chairman of the association, pictured at The Geo in Deerness, where the event takes place, said that he hopes that the show, last held two years ago, will be as popular as ever.

He said that there were over 50 boats on display at the last show, and that it is not too late for boat owners to take part on Sunday. The association would like to have as many different boats from all over Orkney on display.

As well as boats, there will also be a display by Kirkwall Lifeboat, the usual popular raft race, a range of trade and crafts stands, as well as a licensed refreshments tent. A sandcastle competition will also be held.

Last week, an association building, which will house changing rooms and an interpretation centre on Deerness local history, was lowered into place.

In recent months expansion works have been undertaken at The Geo, with a third slipway constructed, as well as berthing walls being extended. Parking space has also been doubled.

These works were made possible due to assistance from the OIC Community Development Fund, European Leader Funding and addition funding from The Crown Estate.
