Ministers must avoid disruption to lifeline ferry services – McArthur

As Serco’s marine staff vote for strike action, Orkney MSP Liam McArthur is demanding that the Scottish Government step in to help resolve the escalating fight between the union and employer.

Mr McArthur said, “These boats provide a lifeline for people in Orkney. The contract to provide these services was renewed this summer by the Government, subject to conditions set by ministers. So the terms of the contract are the Scottish Government’s responsibility.

“Ministers cannot simply step back from this dispute.  They must play their part in preventing industrial action, which would be immensely damaging to local people and the islands’ economy.

“I will be speaking to the transport minister later this week and will also look to raise my concerns during First Minister’s Ministers Questions on Thursday.”
