MSPs take local concerns to EU Commission

Northern Isles MSPs Liam McArthur and Tavish Scott will lobby the European Commission over fishing, agriculture and transport services in Brussels today, Monday.

In a range of meetings they will meet the European Commission departments that affect the islands and MEPs in the European Parliament, including the chairman of the influential European Agriculture Committee.

Commenting on the visit, Orkney MSP Liam McArthur said: “Decisions taken in Brussels have a direct effect on those living and working the islands.  This is particularly true in relation to farming and fishing, both of which are facing significant change and uncertainty at the moment.

“Being able to speak directly to those involved in shaping these decisions is essential, therefore, as it provides an opportunity to set out the islands’ perspective.  On land eligibility, for example, no account has been taken of sheep grazing on seaweed, with the result that some of Orkney’s rare breeds could be under threat.

“With discussions over reform of farming and fishing support reaching a critical stage, this visit by Tavish and myself could not be more timely.”
