Orkney’s newest fire-fighting vehicle has arrived at Orkney’s most remote fire station — North Ronaldsay airfield.

Orkney Islands Council took delivery of the new appliance, which is based on a landrover defender, earlier this month, and the unit was recently delivered by ferry to North Ronaldsay.

North Isles councillor and vice-chair of OIC’s development and infrastructure committee, Graham Sinclair, said: “North Ronaldsay has been looking forward to this new appliance for many years now.

“The previous equipment was trailer-based — so the new Landrover-based appliance is much more mobile and robust. It’s tremendous to see the airfield’s fire fighting abilities enhanced with an appliance which can work reliably in all conditions — something very important for a remote community exposed to the full force of the elements.”
