Ofgem know that actions speak louder than words on energy prices — Carmichael

Northern Isles MP Alistair Carmichael has warned the regulator Ofgem that actions speak louder than words when it comes to getting small companies in the isles a better deal on their energy bills.

Mr Carmichael was speaking after Ofgem announced they will consult on new proposals to extend existing consumer protection rules to cover more businesses.

Safeguards are currently in place to protect small businesses from poor supplier behaviour. These rules apply to Britain’s smallest businesses, which typically employ ten people or less. Ofgem has proposed extending these protections to larger firms that typically spend up to £10,000 a year on each fuel.

Mr Carmichael said: “Whether we are talking people struggling to heat their homes or businesses struggling to pay their bills, energy prices are a key issue in the Northern Isles.

“Work from Ofgem has shown that all too often business customers simply have not got a fair deal from their suppliers. This has been a real problem for smaller firms in particular. The proposals that have now been put forward are welcome, but it is clear that there is still a good deal of work that needs to be done in this area.

“Ofgem need to recognise that while talk might be cheap, energy is not. Another consultation is all well and good but we need to see action to help businesses that are struggling to make ends meet. From my conversations with local firms, I know that the price of fuel is continuing to cause difficulties. I will be working with colleagues in Government to help ensure that companies are getting a fair deal from their suppliers.”
