Orkney man sentenced to five years in prison

An Orkney man has been jailed for five years after being found guilty of causing the death of two women by dangerous driving.

Erland Flaws, 26, was driving a Peugeot 307 car when it struck a vehicle being driven by Moira Towers on the A965 Kirkwall to Stromness road on February 26, 2012.

The High Court in Edinburgh previously heard how Mrs Towers, 65, and her passenger Anne Stanger, 64, were returning from an evening playing bingo in Kirkwall, when Flaws — who had been speeding — hit them.

Flaws strayed on to the other side of the road and hit Mrs Towers’ car, which was coming in the opposite direction.

After a week-long trial in October, the jury delivered their guilty verdict following 60 minutes of deliberation.

Flaws was sentenced at the High Court in Livingston today, Thursday.
