Three-year prison sentence for attempted robbery

A teenager who admitted attempting to rob Baikie’s Stores in Finstown at knife point, has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Appearing at Kirkwall Sheriff Court today, Christopher Baird, 18, was told he will have to serve the remainder of a previous sentence, which will end in August, in custody, before the three-year term begins.

On his release, Baird will also be subject to a supervision order for one year.

Previously, CC-TV footage was shown in court of the attempted robbery, on February 18, which was thwarted when 20-year-old shop assistant Euan Brown struck Baird with a sticky tape dispenser.

Sentencing Baird, Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood said: “I have rarely seen an 18-year-old with such a fearsome record as you have managed to build up in two years.”
