Walrus visits North Ronaldsay

North Ronaldsay was buzzing on Sunday after a walrus was spotted basking at Bridesness in the morning.

The walrus is said to look healthy and, judging by his foot-long tusks, is thought to be a young male.

Peter Donnelly, of the North Ronaldsay Trust, said: “He seems healthy. He’s been lying on the beach occasionally swatting himself in the face and body with his flippers. It’s amazing. Everyone here has been over to see.”

It would appear that his visit was a short one, however, as, by Monday morning, the walrus had departed.
