Abattoir use extension recommended

Councillors have recommended that OMPL can continue using the abattoir for two more years

The OIC’s development and infrastructure committee has recommended that Orkney Meat Processors Ltd, a consortium of four local butchers, can continue to use the council-owned abattoir at Hatston for a further two years.

OMPL has been using the abattoir since June 2012. If the recommendation – which came following discussions held in private – is ratified by Full Council, this will be extended until the end of 2016.

The committee also recommended that during this period, the council carries out a study of future options for maintaining abattoir services in Orkney.
