Annual drain work in Kirkwall carried out
An annual operation has just been completed to keep drains and culverts flowing in areas of Kirkwall that are vulnerable to flooding at times of heavy and prolonged rainfall.
A specialist company uses jetting equipment to remove accumulated debris. A remotely operated camera is then used to highlight areas where any repairs are needed.
The result is an improved flow of through the drainage network – and information the council uses to plan a programme of maintenance and repairs.
Operations are carried out in an area running from the bottom of the Clay Loan – and taking in Main Street and Junction Road – to the Peedie Sea. Drains and culverts in the area between the Pickaquoy camp site and the Peedie sea are also tackled.
During the recent visit, the surface water system between Union Street and the Peedie Sea was jetted and flushed, removing around 20 tonnes of silt.
Camera images then helped the council identify and repair a number of damaged sections within the system.
The council say that it is aware that the work causes inconvenience for drivers and other members of the public, and would like to thank people for their patience and co-operation during the recent operations.
