Former hotel open days

The changing face of the former Commercial Hotel.

Folk in Orkney will get a chance to take a peek inside the newly-refurbished Commercial Hotel when it opens its doors to the public later this month.

Open days are being held from Wednesday 26 September to Saturday 29 September.

As well as an opportunity to tour the completed building, there will also be the unveiling of the Island Gateway Project art exhibition, details on the soon-to-be launched Stromness website and display boards on other Orkney Islands Council projects.

The council purchased the Commercial Hotel in 2008 as part of the £3.4million Stromness Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI), which has seen the conservation area of the town undergo a major facelift, with many traditional building features brought back into use.

During initial consultation with the public, the redevelopment of the Commercial Hotel topped the wish-list for projects to be funded under the THI.  The inside of the building has been refurbished into modern, flexible, top quality office accommodation, with the outside of the building also completely transformed.
