Major air and sea search area widens

The search off South Ronaldsay earlier this evening.

As the search continues for a missing diver off South Ronaldsay, Shetland Coastguard has widened the calculated search area to include waters closer to the north coast of Scotland.

A second Coastguard rescue helicopter based at Inverness has joined the search and two Coastguard rescue teams from Duncansby and Scrabster.

It was at 5.20pm tonight that Shetland Coastguard was alerted to a missing diver from a dive boat off Burwick.

The Coastguard is co-ordinating a search of the Pentland Firth and the islands in the area involving RNLI lifeboats from Longhope, Thurso and Stromness as well as Coastguard rescue teams from Hoy and St Margaret’s Hope.

The Coastguard rescue helicopter from Shetland is also on scene, as well as four commercial vessels who are also assisting with the search.
