McArthur to discuss Orkney Meat closure with minister
Orkney MSP Liam McArthur will meet with Scottish agricultural secretary Richard Lochhead over the news that Orkney Meat is to cease trading.
Mr McArthur said: “This is desperate news, particularly for those who stand to lose their jobs as a result. More generally, of course, the implications for the agricultural and food sectors in Orkney are extremely serious.
“Following discussions with the management of Orkney Meat and Orkney Islands Council, I have set up a meeting with the agriculture secretary, Richard Lochhead next week. This meeting will take place after Orkney Meat’s Board has considered its options on Tuesday evening.
“Given the uncertainty facing the company and its customers, I will be keen to explore with the minister and his officials what assistance the Scottish Government and its agencies can provide, both in the short term and as longer-term decisions are taken in consultation with the local industry.”
