New supermarket for Stromness
The Co-operative Group has agreed plans with Orkney Islands Council to open a new shop in Stromness.
The project will see its existing small convenience store on North End Road relocated to a new larger unit on the former Mart site at Ferry Road.
Existing staff will transfer to the new store, and it is expected that an additional 10 to 15 jobs will be created.
Subject to construction work progressing as planned, and to the necessary licensing being obtained, work will begin on the new store on June 16. It is expected to open in November.
The store will be around 4,000 sq ft sales, and will offer shoppers a wide selection of fresh and chilled products, as well as including an in-store bakery. It will also have 33 car parking spaces and an ATM.
Local Councillor James Stockan said: “It has been a long-standing ambition of Orkney Islands Council to see redevelopment of this site. It is encouraging that a new store will be developed, providing modern facilities for Stromness and the West Mainland.”
