Orkney Museum to close for refurbishment

The Orkney Museum – closing for the winter for refurbishment.

The Orkney Museum, in Kirkwall, will be closing to the public from  Saturday, November 24, to allow for refurbishment works. It is scheduled to re-open in spring 2013.

The works will be mainly electrical with new heating, lighting, security and fire alarm systems set to be installed.

Museum staff will be working alongside the contractors on a rolling programme of packing up the exhibits and moving them into storage. Some of the larger exhibits will remain on site with measures put in place to protect them from the works.

Janette Park, curator at the museum said: “The historic nature of our building has presented a challenge for tradesmen to improve and upgrade the insulation, windows and electrics. The planned works will make the building more energy efficient, helping to reduce running costs and achieving better environmental conditions for the collection.”
