Record temperature for May

Orkney enjoyed one of its warmest weekend’s on record with the temperature reaching a maximum of 24.2C in Birsay, on Saturday.

According to Keith Johnson, who recorded the temperature at his Hundasaeter Weather Station, this is the warmest temperature recorded in the county, during the month of May, since records began in 1857.

On Saturday there were 16.2 hours of sunshine — a level rarely seen in Orkney.

The Met Office figures for Kirkwall show a temperature peak of 21.4C, over the weekend.
