Ross murder conviction will not be referred to court of appeal
The man convicted for the 1994 murder of Shamsuddin Mahmood, in Kirkwall, in 1994, has been told his case will not be referred back to the court of appeal.
The Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission (SCCRC), which examines potential wrongful convictions, has ruled that it will not refer Michael Ross’s case for a fresh appeal.
Ross was sentenced to 25 years in prison at the High Court in Glasgow in October, 2008 — more than 14 years after the killing of Indian waiter, Shamsuddin Mahmood. He was also sentenced to a further five years after leaping from the dock and trying to escape, after being found guilty of the crime.
The Justice for Michael Ross campaign group has said the SCCRC’s decision was disappointing, Â but that they were “not unprepared for this outcome” and has vowed to fight on.
