Sandwick’s domination of Thornley Binders ends
Sandwick’s 18 year domination of the Thornley Binders Cup was ended tonight after a dominant Firth side comprehensively defeated the tangerine men 4-0.
With a strong wind blowing over the Firth pitch, conditions were difficult for both sides. However, it was Firth who drew first blood midway through the first half when Tom Lynch headed in a scrappy opener. With Sandwick struggling to create any clear-cut chances against a well-drilled Firth team, Firth took the bull by the horns in the second half.
Fraser Christie headed in a second after Gareth Manson had struck the bar before Gary Aim scored twice in the last 10 minutes for a deserved victory and ensure there will be a new name on the Thornley Binders trophy for the first time since 1997.
Meeting Firth in the final will be Rendall after they defeated Stromness Burgh in the 3pm game. Stromness were made to rue a string of missed chances as Nick Stevenson put Rendall ahead in the first half.
Rendall’s lead only lasted two minutes though as Morgan levelled the game.
Chris Purnell lit up a dire second half with a fantastic 20 yard strike into the top corner and Derry Skea put the finishing touches on the victory by prodding the ball into the net with the final kick of the game.
