Showcasing Orkney straw-work in London
Local furniture maker Kevin Gauld will be in London next week to exhibit his work with The New Craftsmen, based in Mayfair.
Kevin, who runs his business from St Ola under the name The Orkney Furniture Maker, will be featured at a “pop-up” event starting on December 3 and running for two weeks.
In particular, Kevin will be displaying collaborations created between himself and London-based furniture maker, Gareth Neal, and demonstrating traditional Orkney straw-weaving techniques.
Although he has been making furniture for 16 years, Kevin said the the premise of exhibiting work outside of Orkney is a new one.
He said: “We will be on site, demonstrating the traditional weaving of an Orkney straw back into a bench that has been designed and created by Gareth. This is another project where the traditional straw work of an Orkney chair is to be introduced to a new design.
“Gareth and I will also be on hand to talk with interested parties attending the exhibition.”
Kevin will be exhibiting work with The New Craftsmen at 5 Carlos Place, Mayfair, London.
