Turning cartwheels for charity

Fundraisers Effie Thomson (left) and Georgie Edwards at the fourth Churchill Barrier.

A pair of local lasses have been going head over heels at some of Orkney’s beaches in an effort to raise money for a charity close to their hearts.

Effie Thomson and Georgie Edwards, both ten years old, have raised money for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust over the past month, by cartwheeling the length of 18 of the county’s beaches.

Starting their challenge on April 30 at Scapa beach, Kirkwall, they still have three more beaches to go, bringing their total to 21.

The girls, who are from Holm, have already smashed their £500 fundraising target, raising more than £700 pounds. They also raised an additional £100 by selling wrist bands at school.

They chose the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust as Georgie benefited from the opportunities the charity provides, having had leukemia when she was just four years old.
