Accelerated booster programme anticipated in Scotland

Additional support is to be made available to Scotland, to accelerate the vaccination booster programme.

The announcement was made in the Prime Minister’s address to the nation this evening, in which he set out plans to accelerate England’s booster programme by a month.

All eligible 18-year-olds will be invited for a booster before the new year, in an effort to tackle what Boris Johnson warns will be “a tidal wave of omicron.”

The Prime Minister said that Omicron virus figures in the UK are doubling every two-three days, and that it has now been confirmed that two doses of vaccine will not offer enough protection against the variant, which is believed to be more transmissions than its predecessors.

A third booster dose is thought to be imperative, to bring people’s level of protection back up.

The aim as ever is to protect the NHS from a dramatic surge in cases, which may lead to “many deaths,” the Prime Minister warned.

No further restrictions were added to those encompassed in England’s move to “Plan B” last week.

It is thought the the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon will address Parliament on Tuesday with any further plans.
