Archaeological discovery uncovered by roadworks
Contractors working on the Castle Street repaving project in Kirkwall have uncovered the remains of a historic structure.
The project’s resident archaeologist, Sean Bell, said that a small section of what is believed to be a wall has emerged from the rubble.
Though it has been suggested that this could a section of the 14th Century Kirkwall Castle, which was destroyed in 1614, this remains to be confirmed.
Mr Bell explained that the work to repave Castle Street will continue once the find has been appropriately surveyed.
