Armed Forces Day in Orkney
People have the chance to show their appreciation and support for Orkney’s links with the military when this year’s Armed Forces Day is marked next Saturday, June 27.
In the run up to the event, a flag-raising will take place at the Kirkwall Army Reserve Centre on Monday, June 22.
Orkney Islands Council convener Steven Heddle said: “Armed Forces Day will be particularly poignant this year because of recent commemorations of key events in the First World War, of Orkney’s role in supporting the Arctic Convoys during World War Two, and of the 70th Anniversary of VE Day.”
In addition to the main events, there will be a sponsored cycle on Sunday, June 28, organised by Orkney’s local Army Reserve Unit. This year there will be three routes to choose from, 100 kilometre, 40 mile or 10 mile. The event is to raise funds for Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen’s Families Association (SSAFA).
