People have the chance to show their appreciation and support for Orkney’s links with the military when this year’s Armed Forces Day is marked on Saturday.

In the run up to the event, a flag-raising event took place at the Army Reserve Centre in Kirkwall this morning.

On Saturday there will be a display and information stand on the Kirk Green, throughout the day.

At 1pm a parade will take place between the Royal British Legion and Broad Street, followed by speeches by council representatives and senior armed forces officers. Entertainment will then be provided by the Orkney Traditional Music Project.

Orkney Islands Council Convener Steven Heddle said: “Armed Forces Day will be particularly poignant this year because of recent commemorations of key events in the First World War, of Orkney’s role in supporting the Arctic Convoys during World War Two, and of the 70th Anniversary of VE Day.”

In addition to the main events, there will be a sponsored cycle on Sunday, organised by Orkney’s local Army Reserve Unit. It begins at 9.30am from the Royal British Legion in Kirkwall.

This year there will be three routes to choose from, 100 kilometre, 40 mile or 10 mile. The event is to raise funds for Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen’s Families Association (SSAFA).
