Orkney’s schools will see twelve new probationary teachers joining the classroom this year.

Eight of the teachers have been placed in primary schools while the remaining four have been allocated in secondary schools, two at Kirkwall Grammar School and two at Stromness Academy.

The probationary teachers took part in an induction before the start of the term to help familiarise them with how the schools work, the current curriculum and what Orkney has to offer, among other things.

Wilfred Weir, the Orkney Island Council’s Executive Director for Education, Leisure and Housing, said: “Orkney Islands Council is committed to supporting the teachers through their probationary year. We take many measures to make sure all concerns are met, such as helping them find accommodation and providing an allocated supporter to each school.

“We value the hard work that the probationary teachers give to the schools and our community and look forward to getting to know them throughout the year. We hope that they find Orkney a welcoming and hospitable place to live and work.”
