An exhibition of work by British artist Damien Hirst will open at the Pier Arts Centre, Stromness, tomorrow, Saturday, June 20.

Damien Hirst has been at the forefront of British contemporary art for almost thirty years and is one of the UK’s most prolific artists.

The exhibition brings some of Hirst’s iconic and best-known works to the Pier Arts Centre.

Neil Firth, Pier Arts Centre director, said: “We are thrilled to bring a selection of work by Damien Hirst to Orkney. His work has helped define British contemporary art over the last three decades and is hugely engaging.

“Most people will be familiar with his sculptural works, especially those dealing with issues of life, death and morality and we are pleased to show key works, including Away from the Flock, which is iconic and beautiful.

“The Pier Arts Centre is, of course, an important representation of modern British art and we are delighted to include a number of Hirst’s early works that link to our collection in an unexpected and illuminating way. The exhibition will provide a great opportunity for audiences in Orkney to view the breadth of one of the UK’s greatest living artists.”

The exhibition also includes a selection of early works by Damien Hirst that demonstrates his formative interest in collage and construction. Presented alongside a number of pieces by artist Margaret Mellis (1914 – 2009) from the Pier Arts Centre Collection and on loan from Tate, the exhibition highlights a connection between the two artists.
