Free diabetes assessments on Broad Street
Orkney residents have the opportunity, today, to find out if they are at risk of Type 2 diabetes.
A Healthy Lifestyle Roadshow, run by Diabetes UK in partnership with BUPA was visiting St Magnus Cathedral car park, yesterday and returns today to offer a quick and confidential assessment so that people can find out if they may have, or are at risk of developing the disease.
Diabetes is serious and can lead to devastating complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness or amputation. But, if managed properly, according to Diabetes Scotland, people with diabetes can live long, healthy lives.
Diabetes Scotland statistics show that in Orkney there are 929 recorded cases of Type 2 diabetes, nearly five per cent of the island’s population, with a rise of 52 people over last year.
Anyone who can’t attend the roadshow in Kirkwall can find out their risk of Type 2 diabetes online at www.bupa.co.uk/diabetesriskscore.
