Trainee Reporter

TRAINEE REPORTER
Do you want to work for an award-winning weekly newspaper?
The Orcadian is looking for a bright spark to join our developing news team.
Working for Orkney’s local newspaper, you’ll be at the heart of the community. Opportunities will be far reaching, covering a wide range of events, news, features and online stories, as they happen.
You will train with a skilled team of reporters, learning the ropes on the job, and working towards a diploma with the National Council of Training for Journalists — equipping you with the necessary skills across media law, news writing, shorthand and digital media skills.
In the course of your work, you will hold authorities to account, cover local council and court proceedings, arts, culture, sport and industry news, among the trials, tribulations and celebrations of local people.
Is this opportunity right for you?
We are looking to invest in somebody who is passionate about all things Orkney, and who wants to establish a long-term career in a thriving and vibrant community.
You’ll be sociable, interested in people and culture, keen to keep an eye on the news as it emerges, and willing to go above and beyond to cover a story as it happens. You’ll be a team player, but confident working under your own steam and working under pressure to tight deadlines.
You’ll be creative, curious, and understand social media and storytelling across social platforms.
You’ll have at least three Highers or A-Levels, including English.
What are we offering?
We will train you to the highest industry standards, and offer an excellent benefits package. Salary increasing on experience and attainment, and you’ll work with an all-round brilliant team on a day-to-day basis.
To apply, please send your CV along with a covering letter to: Mark Harcus, Editor, The Orcadian, Hell’s Half Acre,
