McArthur seeks assurances over future of Red Cross guest house

Assurances have been provided that there is no immediate threat of closure of the British Red Cross guest house in Kirkwall.

Concerns had been raised locally about the potential closure of the guest house, which accommodates those from the isles who may be receiving hospital treatment or their relatives.

Orkney’s MSP, Liam McArthur, has met with the British Red Cross to discuss the future provision of their guest house in Kirkwall.

Mr McArthur has received assurances that there will be no immediate closure and that discussions with Orkney Islands Council, NHS Orkney and local stakeholders on a sustainable, long-term solution will continue.

Mr McArthur said: “I welcome the commitment from the British Red Cross to keep open its guest house while discussions continue with local stakeholders to find a sustainable, long-term solution.

“This facility has proved invaluable for many islanders over the years. For those travelling in from the smaller isles who often face long, tiring journeys to attend hospital appointments the guest house has often been a godsend.

“As discussions over the future of the facility take place, it will be important that the communities most directly affected are closely involved. Meantime, I have offered whatever support I can to help these discussions reach a successful conclusion.”
