Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament elected
Jack Norquoy and Thorfinn Moffat have been elected as Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament for the Orkney constituency.
The result was announced this afternoon in the OIC chamber by returning officer Alistair Buchan.
Speaking shortly afterwards, fifteen-year-old Jack, who attends Stromness Academy, said: “I’m delighted to be elected and feel very honoured to have been chosen to represent Orkney’s young people.”
It was an early birthday present for KGS pupil Thorfinn, who turns 17 tomorrow, Tuesday.
He said: “I’m very humbled. I thought it was a close competition. It was a surprise to win and I’m looking forward to it very much.”
Speaking before the result was announced, OIC convener Steven Heddle paid tribute to all four candidates who stood, including Beth Thomson and Ria Leslie.
“It takes a great degree of courage to stand for public office,” he said.
“Any one of them would be excellent ambassadors for Orkney.”
