Move to shorten OIC leader tenure refused

James Stockan is the current OIC leader, having served a full five-year term of office.
A motion to shorten this tenure for the role in future has been refused.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” So said Councillor Barbara Foulkes in her support of the successful resistance to the latest attempt to impose mid-term elections for Orkney’s local government leader.

Orkney islands councillors voted in favour of the status quo in which the leader serves for the five year span of a council.

They rejected a move on Thursday to have elections every two years for the post.
