The airfield in Eday has received a four-wheel drive firefighting vehicle as part of Orkney Island Council’s efforts to upgrade existing equipment in the North Isles.

North Ronaldsay is already making use of a new firefighting vehicle, with Papa Westray, Sanday, Stronsay and Westray scheduled to receive theirs in the next two months.

Councillor James Stockan, chairman of the OIC’s development and infrastructure committee, was present when the fire crew at Eday’s London Airport took charge of the vehicle.

“Fire protection is an essential service at our island airfields,” he said. “The council is upgrading the vehicles to keep pace with changing regulations and enhance the capability of airfield fire crews across the North Isles.”
