No joy for Fjara at Young Enterprise national final

Kirkwall Grammar School’s Young Enterprise company, Fjara, came away empty handed at the UK finals in London last night.

Fourteen companies went through to the final, the results of which were announced at the British Film Institute, London, on Thursday.

fjaraThe UK company of the year was named as Orenda — the East of England regional winners — for their “Sip O Snack”, a drink and snack container.

KGS’s Fjara, which creates jewellery using sea glass collected from beaches around the county, took the Young Enterprise Company of the Year title at the Scottish finals last month, as well as the Investors in Young People award and the Marketing Star award.

Fjara’s managing director, Betty Andrews, was also named Managing Director of the Year and KGS teachers, Kerry Warman and Aileen McGregor, were named named Link Teachers of the Year.

Fjara is made up of 14 sixth-year pupils: Betty Andrews,  Ronan Osborne, Lillie Flett, Sarah MacPhail, Holly Rendall, Andrew Fraser, Hannah Keith, Hayley Duncan, James Kemp, Megan Ward, Thora Cant, Ellen Rendall, Kyle Boyd and Iona Muir.
