Orkney entries welcomed for education awards

People in Orkney are being urged to submit nominations for this year’s Scottish Education Awards before the deadline on Monday, February 16.

The awards, which celebrate the achievements of schools and teachers across Scotland, have attracted hundreds of nominations so far, but many more schools and individuals are worthy of acknowledgement.

Chair of Orkney Islands Council’s education, leisure and housing committee, councillor Janice Annal, said: “The past year has seen some wonderful work carried out by our schools and their communities. For example several of our school communities have worked together to create ‘scrap stores’ to encourage imaginative play, including Glaitness Primary who were showcased at the Scottish Learning Festival last year.

“Categories are wide ranging and nominations can be for parents , teachers, support workers and partner organisations – anyone who has contributed to the life of a school. So I’d encourage anyone who has been involved in a project they are proud of to speak to their head teacher about putting together a nomination.”

There is a wide variety of award categories which recognise and reward the dedication of teaching staff and educational supporters who go the extra mile. Entry is open to all publicly funded schools including secondary, primary, nursery and special schools.

Nominations can only be accepted online.  To nominate a school, teacher, headteacher or support staff member, or for more information on the award categories, go to www.scottisheducationawards.org.uk

Winners will be revealed at an awards ceremony in Glasgow later on this year.
