Orkney secures funding for electric bike scheme
Orkney Islands Council has received a share of a £5 million funding pot from the Scottish Government to encourage less car use and more journeys by foot, bicycle, public transport and car share.
The council will receive up to £50,000 – from the Smarter Choices Smarter Places programme – towards the cost of purchasing electric bikes for hire to the public and visitors, which will be made available from the Kirkwall Travel Centre. Bikes will also be located at the council offices in Kirkwall.
The project also includes the provision of a part-time member of staff during 2015/16 to develop a Green Travel Plan for Orkney.
